Statement
Curiosity about the human body and the spaces around it has consistently preoccupied Lloyd’s artistic imagination. Specifically, Lloyd have been asking questions about the bodies of women and how they relate to the architectures that direct their movement. How do material structures inside and outside bodies influence identity and agency? How do women find freedom now? As a visual artist, Lloyd asks these questions using fibres of all kinds with traditional and improvised textile methods resulting in costumes, performances and installations. In doing so, the physical activity of tying and untying knots demonstrates the theoretical activity of connection and distinction. That is to say, how we join with and separate from our environments.
Profile
GlogauAIR resident from October 2019 to March 2020
GlogauAIR Project
During the residency at GlogauAIR, my time will be devoted to learning local textile traditions and working toward the creation of a fibres based work that responds to contemporary gender politics in Berlin. Taking advantage of the multi-disciplinary setting of GlogauAIR and collaborating with artists across fields, I aim to make an artwork that furthers my longtime interest in gendered space. I am currently studying weaving traditions of Northern New Mexico with a congruent focus. Navajo, Hopi and Anasazi weaving practices are divergent, reflecting temporal, spatial, political and cosmological histories and realities. It is my intention to investigate comparable textile expressions.
