Julia Kan

Julia Kan is GlogauAIR resident
from October, 2023 to December, 2023

Julia Kan’s artistic journey embarks from a fascination with photography, initially serving as a medium to apprehend the surrounding spaces through visual creation. As her practice evolved, the realm of scenography opened avenues for the reinvention of these spaces. The synergy between photography and scenography intertwines, both conceptually and aesthetically.

Meet the Artist

At the core of her artistic exploration lies a thematic focus on vision, spatiality, time, transformation, and perception. These concepts manifest through a meticulous blend of visual, manual, and analog constructions, illustrating the intricate relationship between image creation and spatial reinterpretation.

During her GlogauAIR Residency, Julia is working on a project that delves into the ever-evolving landscape of image consumption. From historical canvases to contemporary screens, especially on mobile phones, she investigates the transformative impact of this prevalent mode of image interaction. By considering both personal experiences and the inherent materiality of the emerging image-object, Kan’s work becomes a captivating exploration of the dynamics within this technological shift.

Statement

The interest in photography began as a way to recognize the spaces around me through image creation. Subsequently, scenography granted me the freedom to reinvent them. Currently, these two artistic expressions are interconnected, blending conceptually and aesthetically. I collect spaces through images and conceive images through objects; this duality between three-dimensional and two-dimensional is a source for a body of work in expanded field. The artistic practice is based on concepts like vision, spatiality, time, transformation, and perception and manifest themselves through visual, manual and analog constructions.

GlogauAIR Project

The project delves into the evolving landscape of image consumption. Throughout history, images found their homes on walls, paper, and canvases. In recent decades, screens, particularly on mobile phones, have emerged as the dominant medium. These screens not only transform the visual and material nature of images but also evolve technologically while succumbing to deterioration over time. This project explores the dynamics of this prevalent mode of image consumption, considering both personal experiences and the physical characteristics of this emerging image-object.
