Palais Populaire in Berlin is celebrating artist Charmaine Poh’s first solo institutional exhibition in Germany, “Make a Travel Deep of Your Inside, and Don’t Forget Me to Take,” following her recognition as Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year” in 2025. The exhibition showcases Poh’s multimedia work, including video, installation, and performance art. Her art explores themes of identity, power structures, feminism, and queerness with a particular focus on Southeast Asia.
In an interview, Poh discusses her transformative journey from being a child TV star in Singapore to becoming a critically acclaimed artist living in Berlin. She reflects on her use of deepfake and AI technology in works such as Good Morning Young Body, through which she reclaims her childhood experience and challenges objectification and societal pressures. Her latest video installation, “The Moon is Wet,” features female figures from mythology and history to explore migration, labor, and the invisible contributions of women, both past and present. Poh’s decision to incorporate minority languages into her art is a form of resistance against cultural and governmental repression in Singapore, emphasizing the universality of marginalized voices.
Running from September 11, 2025, to February 23, 2026, the show positions Poh as a vital artistic presence, redefining feminist and queer narratives through deeply personal yet politically resonant storytelling.
